Are you feeling burned out?

Do you feel like you need to hit the pause button for a moment on life and focus on yourself?

Then a retreat may be just what you need.

But you might be asking yourself… Which retreat?! What should I expect? We know there are a lot of options out there and your time and resources are valuable. This blog post will be your guide to picking the best retreat for you. We will discuss what questions you should ask, and items to take into consideration, when picking the perfect retreat for you.

1. Start with what matters most: what kind of experience are YOU looking for?

Whether it’s yoga, fitness training, travel, health and wellness restoration, or adventure— Think about what type of experience will truly serve you in the current season of life you are in. For example, are you healing from the loss of a loved one or a divorce? Or perhaps you are in more of a celebratory mood, looking to do something special to commemorate a milestone in life perhaps? Different retreats will have different vibes, so be clear on what vibe you are looking for and what you need.

2. What destination speaks to you the most?

Many retreats are internationally based, is there a place you have always wanted to travel to?

How far away is the destination? Will you need to take an additional day off for travel before and after the retreat in order to reach the destination? If it is a destination you have always wanted to travel to, would you like to add on a few days after to explore the region more? With most retreats being a week in length, you are often not going to be able to see everything the country has to offer. So be sure to look into their itinerary and see if there is something else you would really like to see so you can plan accordingly.

3.  What is included in the retreat tuition?

Some retreats only include 1-2 meals a day, for example, others are full board. Be sure to read the fine print before booking to fully understand what will be covered. It is also a great idea if you have special dietary needs to make sure they can accommodate your particular needs. Some good things to look into: what are the classes, workshops, tours, meals, and accommodations that are included? What do they estimate you will need to budget in addition to your retreat tuition.

4. Look at the length of the program.

Some retreats are a weekend, others can span to 7 days+. If you are really looking to help transform yourself, then typically it can be helpful to choose a retreat that is longer in length than a weekend. So your mind, body and spirit can really have time to decompress, heal and transform.

4. Read reviews.

No use in having to step into the unknown. We always look at the reviews for everything we do, even eating a meal out. Your retreat should be no different. Some best practices when it comes to reading reviews: how recent are the reviews? Are the reviews about the retreat or something similar you would be attending? We also take it a step further and check out companies on social media, platforms like Instagram can be a great place to get a more holistic picture of their experiences. Especially if they have user-posted content which likely will be less manicured. A great way to find this content is to see if they have a hashtag.

5. Always get insurance!

Life happens, read the fine print and make sure you fully understand the terms and conditions. Most retreats do not have refunds. So to protect yourself and the funds you have invested on things like retreat tuition and flights. A great policy to get is a “Cancel For Any Reason” policy. This will protect you for any “non refundable” expenses.
